A famous brand of sport shoes is identified with a great motto: “Just do it”
I think that is an excellent piece of advice beyond the advertising benefits it yields.
If there is something that gives us more mental, emotional and physical balance that is reaching the goals and objectives we wish through action.
Human beings are creative by nature, that is, it comes natural to us to conceive an idea in our mind and then turn that idea into something tangible and measurable.
Sometimes you know what you have to do. However, excuses and the inner imaginary persona refraining you to reach success can find the way to keep you inside your comfort zone. In my case I named the imaginary being who complains and blames me when I get up early to do any productive work over the weekends: Rotilio is a lazy, good-for-sleeping fellow if the matter at hands is going that extra mile, using his imagination in a very effective way for not very productive tasks, and he is such a talent to make up excuses. The other day he came up with a futuristic backpain, claiming that should I continue working, seated, for more than 15 minutes I could develop a disk herniation! Lucky enough I know the guy very, very well and I know that what he wants to do is to just sleep Saturdays off. So what I did was to start working standing. Then he promptly claimed that I was going to become a midget for being standing for such a long time. The truth is that Rotilio is pure talent.
We need to identify that inner us, to name him or her -a funny name, mind you- and visualize that persona like a mocking, burlesque entity. (Way too many times this being comes out as excuses, the inner voice or minor physical upsetting conditions.) This way we can face these inner saboteurs and be ready to move to action.
If what you need to do is writing that resume for that new job you want to get so much, just do it.
If what you want is to ask the phone number to the new neighbor in your building and begin a new relationship, just do it.
IF what you need is to run 5 miles every day to improve your health, don’t listen to your inner Rotilio and just do it.
Action is what differentiates success from failure; from active to passive. From dream to reality.
Don’t become your inner being. DON’T BE ROTILIO; Just do it.
And, what’s the name of that inner you?
