Monday: after a great weekend. The kids were kind of slow while getting ready for school. JJ feels somehow frustrated as it is the up tenth time he loses his glasses. I kindly remind him that he already has them in his backpack as not to lose them last Saturday when he was skateboarding. He even feel more frustrated as he seldom remembers things. Actually he thinks he has a very bad memory because he does not recall things when he needs to. I am certain he has a very good memory; his awareness of the present moment is simply of a very short term.

But of course he is not the only child experiencing lack of awareness of the present moment. And it is not either a situation exclusively affecting boys or girls but all of us, human beings in general and it is likely that you have gone through times, situations and moments when you don’t recall something that was very easy to remember or you were just simply absent.

The good news is that you do not necessarily have poor memory. It might be that you are not aware of the present moment and therefore you don’t remember this or that situation.

The fact that we go through life in autopilot cheats you from many great things. Take for instance, experiencing your senses. Do you remember the last time that you really relished dinner? Which new flavors did you taste? New smells perhaps?  Do you remember the last time you were aware of your breathing? Or maybe you can remember what you were wearing last Friday?

Tuesday: A busy day at home. After the “glasses incident” JJ was in better spirits although more distracted than the previous day. This time his eyes were in limbo when he was having breakfast. His body was sitting there at the table, but his mind who knows where.  I remembered that the previous day I mentally escaped while driving that came to an end when getting home. At that moment I wondered how I was able to get home.

We definitively have to do something about it. Both JJ and I are very distracted. We need to be aware of this moment. Aware of the here and now.

And this was the proposal:

Me: JJ I have a very nice challenge for you.

JJ: Yes Popi*?

Me: Yes. You’ll see how fun it is! I want you to pay attention to 7 good things that happen to you during the day, today, write them down and we share that tomorrow morning.  On my part and since I am older I will pay attention to 21 good things that happen to me today and I will share them with you tomorrow morning at breakfast.

JJ: Why are we doing that Popi?

(I was not really expecting that question although knowing how he is I should have)

Me: Well, it is this experiment I am trying. I want to confirm that when one pays attention to the good things that happen more things -and good things- also come… too many that they will not be 7, but 21…51 or a 100!!!

JJ: A million?  (He said his face reflecting hope… )

Me: It might be, yes, at a certain time in your life … or considering many days .Go figure.

JJ: I also have a challenge… I challenge you to a run!

Me: So don’t forget. Let’s see tomorrow how it went.

With that challenge I am not only motivating mindfulness but also motivating to be more positive because wherever you focus your attention more energy you target.
